Charles Beard, an American Advocate
of democracy, in 1939, wrote that “it is idle gossip to speak of the gains of
democracy unless leaders in government embark on methods and measures that will
provide wide distribution of services essential to a democratic society”.
Based on this postulation
therefore, it is expedient to assess the gains of democracy in Akwa Ibom state,
as delivered to the people by Governor Godswill Akpabio.
Since his
assumption of office in 2007, Governor Akpabio has geared his efforts at
turning around the fortunes of the people so much so that “good governance is
the phrase that best describes the administration of Governor Akpabio.
This, in
turn has warranted awards of excellence from various quarters within and
outside Nigeria such as the Media, Churches, Corporate and Professional bodies,
Groups, Financial Institutions and Banks and others that have heaped honors on
the Governor of Governors in Nigeria. The most recent being Silver Bird Man of
the Year 2011.
We cannot
forget Governor Akpabio’s Congressional recognition in the United States, the Award
by the Nigeria Defense Academy, Kaduna, the Emerging Tiger award by This Day
Newspaper and the Central Bank of Nigeria Award for Infrastructural Development
and many others that eloquently speak of the uncommon achievements of Governor
Akpabio.
In
recognition of the fact that the essence of governance is essentially a
covenant or a contract between the ruler and the ruled, the Governor has
centered the focus of his administration on the well being and development of
the people as he promised during his electioneering campaigns.
Because they are pillars of good governance, the Governor has
been propelled by the principles of equity, social justice, fairness, peace,
unity and human capital development.
Equity implies equality of treatment of people regardless of
their ethnic origins, religious affiliations and social status. Governor Akpabio
has been able to achieve equity in his administration by the prevailing
equality of access to opportunities for self development and determination, and
elimination of poverty, ignorance and indolence.
Governor Akpabio
has remarkably honored the social rights of the people by the provision of free
and compulsory basic education, health services, shelter and safety of lives
and properties.
On the economic scorecard, Governor Akpabio has achieved an
uncommon feat in providing employment, infrastructures such as roads, water,
electricity, and gingering increased agricultural production and transformation
of the hinterlands into centres of production.
Prominent
among Governor Akpabio’ s achievements in the area of political right are
guaranteeing for the people full participation in political processes free from
discrimination and victimization, in ensuring public accountability,
transparency and intergrity and enhancing opportunities for the traditionally
excluded groups such as women and youths.
In terms of
human capital development and empowerment, the story is the same. Youths and
women of the state are the greatest beneficiaries. The integrated Farmers Scheme
in the state have empowered thousands of youth with the five hundred thousand
naira loan for each of the farmers while more than two thousand women have
benefited from the interest free loan of two hundred and fifty thousand naira
Agro entrepreneur’s scheme of the state government.
CONGRATULATIONS HIS EXCELLENCY.
