Uyo is a
city in south-eastern Nigeria and is the capital of Akwa Ibom State, a major
oil producing state of Nigeria. The city became a capital of Akwa Ibom State in
September, 1987 following the creation of Akwa Ibom State from Cross River
State. The city is site of the University of Uyo. The population is estimated
to be about 1.5 Million in population of 2006.
Uyo is a
fast growing City as the city can boast of some massive infrastructural growth
in the past years. It has an intensive network of dual carriage roads such as
the Edet Akpan Avenue currently the widest road in the Uyo metropolis. It is an
eight lane Super Highway bordered with carpet grasses, flowers, trees, Traffic
Lights and Street Lights. Currently some flyovers are under construction in the
city to ease traffic. The city also boasts of public recreational areas such as
the Ibom Connection, the prestigious Le Meridian Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort
which is the largest hotel in the West African region.
A few
years ago, Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, was a dusty little city full of
bad roads, perpetual power outage, and a drab night life. But a deliberate plan
of action by GOVERNOR AKPABIO has led to the transformation of the city.
A
well-conceived infrastructural development programme by HIS EXCELLENCY GOVERNOR
AKPABIO has resulted in tragic development of the municipality. Consequently,
the construction of new roads and bridges has now opened up Uyo to the rest of
the world in such a way that has never been seen before.
The reconstruction
of the Ikpa road- Ikot Ekpene roundabout project was constructed under a month’s
time, kudos to ‘OUR DEFINITION OF TRUE GOVERNANCE’.
The
Governor is at it again as he is currently reconstructing the Ibom Plaza which
was once the center of attraction but was taken over by traders who littered
and rob it of its beauty. Construction is still ongoing.
